Hayden Haikal wins first international title

Malaysian teenager Hayden Haikal raced to back to back victories in the final round of the Idemitsu Super Turbo Championship to win his first international title and be crowned the 2023 Thailand Junior Class champion (normally aspirated class).

Going into the final race weekend, the 18-year-old had a slim 1 point lead in the overall point standings, but clearly exerted his dominance in the #437 Wing Hin Motorsports Toyota Vios by winning 5 of the total 6 races throughout the season.

In both the final races on Saturday and Sunday (17-18 June) at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Hayden was locked in close combat with his nearest rival Warunyoo Sangla. He needed to finish ahead of the Thai in order to consolidate his championship title hopes and that was precisely what Hayden did. Warunyoo had led but finished second to Hayden in both races and when the final overall point standings were published he ended the season three points adrift of Hayden’s total of 88 points collected.

“I feel super happy because this (winning an overall title in Thailand) has been one of my goals since I started racing in Thailand last year. I feel so relieved to have finally won, having come close to winning last year in the Thailand Super Eco Series,” said Hayden who now has the opportunity of bagging a second overall title in the Thailand Super Eco Series.

“Much of the credit must go to the team Wing Hin Motorsports who worked very hard to place a championship winning Vios on the grid and entrusting me to spearhead their first ever racing campaign in Thailand. It’s fantastic to be able to repay them for all their hard work by winning the title.”
