According to a report by the Bangkok Post, the Thai Government is considering a long holiday in July to make up for the cancellation of Songkran festivities, if the Covid-19 situation continues to improve, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said earlier today.
Taweesilp Visanuyothin, a spokesperson for the CCSA said a holiday for the deferred Songkhan period is possible next month on condition However, the CCSA said a July holiday is only possible if the Thai people are able to help bring the new Covid-19 cases to only single digit, or better at zero.
“July could be a period to make up for Songkran if everything goes well,” he added.
The government delayed the Thai new year festival holiday from April 13-15 until further notice due to fears of virus outbreak caused by the large gatherings and the homecoming of revelers.
However, the sharp drop in new cases and deaths, the possible end of the emergency decree and a government attempt to promote local tourism have raised hopes that a long holiday replacing Songkran could be imminent.
Dr Taweesilp said keeping the number of new cases and deaths low will be a factor to consider when authorizing a replacement for Songkran.
