Kuala Lumpur – Kuala Lumpur is once again stepping into the global motorsport spotlight. Once a vibrant hub for street racing in Southeast Asia—thanks to the Kuala Lumpur Street Circuit and the 2015 Kuala Lumpur City Grand Prix—the city is gearing up for a dramatic revival of its motorsport heritage.
International portal GPOne has revealed that MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports has chosen Kuala Lumpur as the official launch venue for the 2026 MotoGP season. The announcement marks a major return of high-performance machinery to Malaysia’s city streets, this time centred around the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers.

Dorna Sports has confirmed that the 2026 season presentation will take place on February 6 and 7, featuring a specially constructed 1.5-kilometre urban circuit winding along Jalan Ampang and looping around the KLCC area. The temporary track will feature a 400-metre straight, spectator zones, viewing stands and even a functioning pit and box complex built right in the heart of the city centre.
The showcase is designed to emulate the intensity and atmosphere of a full street circuit, bringing riders and machines within arm’s reach of fans. This approach mirrors similar urban-style season launches organised by Dorna in Bangkok, aimed at elevating MotoGP’s global visibility and fan engagement.
While Dorna emphasised that MotoGP bikes cannot safely race competitively on city streets due to technical and safety constraints, the controlled environment offers a rare opportunity to witness premier-class motorcycles in an urban setting. Significant planning is underway to manage safety clearances, logistics and crowd control.
Adding intrigue to the announcement, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta recently hinted that a full urban MotoGP race could be possible in the future if adequate safety measures can be achieved. This positions the Kuala Lumpur showcase not merely as a promotional event but as a potential testing ground for the sport’s future evolution.
To amplify the festival atmosphere, a closing concert will take place at the end of the two-day programme, transforming KLCC into a motorsport-themed lifestyle destination. The initiative reflects Dorna’s modern entertainment-driven direction, blending racing, culture and live experiences into one large-scale event.
If successful, the Kuala Lumpur showcase could serve as a model for similar MotoGP urban experiences worldwide, signalling a bold new chapter for the sport. With Kuala Lumpur leading the charge, MotoGP’s next evolution may very well begin in Malaysia’s capital.
