Bangkok’s famous Khao San Road is undergoing final preparations in anticipation of reopening to the public on either July 1st or August 1st following weeks of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, yesterday more than 200 volunteers, police, and soldiers joined a huge effort in cleaning up the recently renovated area that has undergone a major face-lift and to become a new landmark for street vendors in Bangkok.
A new 400-meter footpath has been installed alongside new infrastructure and facilities such as 60 centimeter high collapsible stainless railings and barriers aimed to keep vendors apart from the traffic.
More than 250 vendors have registered to have permanent stalls at the area and are currently prepping up their selling areas for the reopening.
The stalls will be divided into zones for easier management regarding opening times and convenience for visitors. There will be zones for clothing, general items and food.
They will be allowed to sell from 12pm to midnight under the city’s new rules for street vending.
But Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang may consider extending the time by dividing it into two periods — 9am-5pm and 6pm-12am — in order to serve new vendors, Phra Nakhon district officials said.
The government spent 48.4 million baht in renovating the area.
