SEPANG, 26 July 2026 – Formula 1 is officially returning to Malaysia after Formula 1 and the FIA confirmed that the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia from 2-4 October 2026.
The race will take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, marking Sepang’s long-awaited return to the pinnacle of world motorsport for the first time since 2017.
The arrangement, which remains subject to final agreements and approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, was reached between Formula 1, the FIA, the Governments of Bahrain and Malaysia. It allows the Bahrain Grand Prix to proceed despite ongoing regional challenges, while preserving the full Formula 1 calendar without further changes.
The iconic Sepang International Circuit, which first hosted Formula 1 in 1999, has earned a reputation as one of the championship’s most demanding venues thanks to its fast, technical layout, tropical climate and passionate fanbase.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali described the agreement as a testament to the sport’s ability to adapt while ensuring fans continue to enjoy a complete championship.
“We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026,” said Domenicali.
“Malaysia is an incredible country, and Sepang holds a special place in Formula 1 history. It will provide a spectacular setting for racing and an unforgettable experience for fans at the circuit and watching around the world.”
He also thanked the leadership of both Bahrain and Malaysia, including His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, for making the agreement possible.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the return to Sepang highlights the strength of international cooperation within the sport while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of teams, officials, volunteers and fans remained the top priority throughout the process.
“Malaysia has long held an important place in the history of Formula 1 and the return of the Championship to Sepang is testament to our close relationship with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia and the continued commitment of the Malaysian Government,” he said.
Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, said the agreement reflects the close relationship between Bahrain and Malaysia while ensuring Formula 1 fans around the world can continue to enjoy a full championship calendar.
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the opportunity to host the event, describing it as a reflection of the strong friendship between the two nations.

Malaysia’s return to the Formula 1 calendar is expected to generate significant economic benefits through tourism, hospitality and global media exposure, while reigniting excitement among local motorsport fans who have waited nearly a decade to see Formula 1 cars race once again at Sepang.
