TGR Vios Challenge Season 9 Reaches Boiling Point at Sepang as Drama, New Heroes and Championship Twists Take Centre Stage

SEPANG – If Round 1 was about setting the pace, Round 2 of the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Vios Challenge Season 9 was all about raising the stakes.

Under the scorching Malaysian sun at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit South Track, the nation’s premier one-make racing championship delivered a weekend packed with fierce battles, breakthrough performances, unexpected setbacks, and championship-defining moments as the series reached its halfway mark.

With 37 competitors contesting the Super Sporting, Sporting and Rookie Classes, alongside 14 entries in the increasingly popular Classic Challenge, fans were treated to some of the closest racing seen this season. The action attracted an impressive 618,000 viewers via livestream, further cementing the championship’s status as Malaysia’s leading production-based saloon car racing series.

Mitchell Cheah Returns to Winning Ways

The Super Sporting Class once again showcased why it remains the championship’s premier category.

Former champion Mitchell Cheah produced one of the standout drives of the weekend in Race 1. Starting seventh on the grid, the Team Prima Pearl SP Selatan driver carved his way through the field before mounting a late challenge on race leader Nabil Azlan. After 16 laps of relentless pursuit, Cheah completed his charge to secure a long-awaited victory.

“It’s great to be back on top,” said Cheah after the race. “We’re feeling much better with the car this weekend and hopefully we can carry this momentum moving forward.”

However, the script flipped dramatically in Race 2.

S&D Tama Motorsports’ Tom Goh initially led the race before a mistake opened the door for Toyotsu Racing’s William Ho, who seized the opportunity and stormed into the lead. Ho’s pace proved unstoppable as he secured victory ahead of Nabil Azlan and Ady Rahimy.

Meanwhile, defending champion Freddie Ang endured a frustrating weekend. A 30-second penalty in Race 1 combined with a sixth-place finish in Race 2 saw the championship leader surrender valuable points in what could prove to be a pivotal turning point in the title fight.

Foreign Drivers Shine in Sporting Class

The Sporting Class belonged to the international contingent.

Thailand’s Varunchit Wattanathanakun delivered a masterclass in Race 1, taking control from the opening lap and steadily stretching his advantage to more than 11 seconds by the chequered flag.

Competing for RUK Team PMC 52, the Thai driver demonstrated both speed and consistency while Malaysia’s Elson Lew and India’s Aditya Patnaik rounded out a multinational podium.

“It’s great to be racing in Malaysia,” said Varunchit. “The driving standards are incredibly high here and it’s a solid training ground for my development as a driver.”

Race 2 saw local talent fight back, with Adam Mikail of G-Mart Best Autosport claiming victory ahead of Justin Toh and Taj Aiman.

Rookie Class Produces New Generation of Stars

The future of Malaysian motorsport was on full display in the Rookie Class.

Seventeen-year-old Imran Iskandar finally converted his early-season promise into victory by taking Race 1 after two runner-up finishes in the opening round. The simulator racer turned saloon car competitor dominated from pole position to secure his maiden win.

Yet the biggest story belonged to 16-year-old Ethen Low.

Having missed Round 1 while waiting to obtain his national racing licence, Low announced his arrival in spectacular fashion. After finishing second in Race 1, he went one better in Race 2 to secure victory and complete a dream debut weekend.

The achievement highlighted the effectiveness of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia Young Talent Development Programme, which continues to create pathways for young drivers transitioning from karting and simulator racing into professional motorsport.

“I could not have asked for a better race debut,” said Low. “I look forward to repeating and improving on this performance in the coming rounds.”

Classic Challenge Delivers Heart-Stopping Drama

If fans were looking for pure motorsport drama, the Classic Challenge delivered in abundance.

Race 1 was interrupted twice by safety car periods, the first following a spectacular incident that saw Harkiesh Geeva’s Aylezo Motorsport entry flip into the gravel trap at Turn 1. Fortunately, the driver escaped unhurt despite the extensive damage sustained by the car.

Another dramatic collision involving Nurul Husna’s Rock Racing machine late in the race triggered a second safety car intervention.

Amid the chaos, Kegani Racing Academy’s Loke Yin Yi and Kenny Lee executed a perfectly timed strategy to claim victory, ahead of brothers Brendan Paul and Bradley Benedict Anthony.

Race 2 proved equally thrilling.

The 91R Racing duo of Mohamad Anaqi and Mohamad Hariry looked set for a dominant win after building an eight-second lead, only for a late safety car period to erase their advantage and ignite a dramatic sprint to the finish.

At the restart, the Anthony brothers seized the opportunity and held off relentless pressure from Kenny Lee and Loke Yin Yi in a breathtaking final-lap battle to secure victory by little more than a car length.

Championship Battle Intensifies

With two rounds completed, Season 9 is shaping up to be one of the most competitive editions of the TGR Vios Challenge yet.

The emergence of new race winners, the growing influence of international competitors, and the unpredictability created by reverse-grid and success-ballast regulations have ensured that no championship contender can afford a single mistake.

With a total prize purse of RM876,000 and four rounds scheduled this season, the championship now heads into Round 3 carrying significant momentum.

The next chapter unfolds on 25-26 July at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit, where competitors will tackle the full 5.543km Grand Prix circuit in what promises to be another high-intensity weekend of racing action.

As the title battles heat up and new stars continue to emerge, the road to the Season 9 championship is far from settled.
