Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia 2026: From Car Show to Full-Throttle Automotive Festival

MAEPS, Serdang — Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia 2026 has completed its three-day run at MAEPS Serdang, marking a significant new chapter for one of Malaysia’s biggest Japanese automotive culture events.

Held from October 2 to 4, 2026, the event — formerly known as Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur (TAS KL) — made its debut under the new Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia identity and moved from MITEC to the much larger MAEPS venue.

The relocation was more than a change of address. It allowed the organisers to rethink the format, expanding Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia beyond a conventional indoor motor show into a more immersive automotive festival combining exhibition halls with outdoor activities, live demonstrations, community gatherings, entertainment and lifestyle elements.

With the show running from 10am to 10pm across all three days, MAEPS became a meeting point for JDM enthusiasts, tuners, aftermarket brands, car clubs, collectors, builders, content creators and curious members of the public.

A Bigger Space for a Bigger Vision

The move from MITEC to MAEPS was arguably the most important change for the 2026 edition.

Previous editions of TAS KL were heavily centred around indoor exhibition space. The new MAEPS format opened up room for outdoor activities, including live vehicle demonstrations and drift action, giving visitors the opportunity to experience modified cars not just as static displays, but in motion.

The official Tokyo Auto Salon organisation described the 2026 edition as an evolution towards an event where visitors could experience cars through sound, movement, food and entertainment, rather than simply viewing them on display.

That distinction was evident throughout the venue.

The indoor halls remained the heart of the commercial showcase, packed with customised vehicles, aftermarket products, tuning brands and automotive technology. Outside, meanwhile, the atmosphere shifted from showroom mode to something considerably more energetic, with community gatherings, food and live automotive activities adding another dimension to the experience.

It was a format that felt less like walking through a car show and more like spending an entire day inside the car culture itself.

Where JDM Culture Met Malaysia’s Custom Scene

One of the strongest aspects of Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia 2026 was the combination of international automotive influence and Malaysia’s own grassroots scene.

The event showcased the familiar hallmarks of Japanese tuning culture — aggressive aero, carefully selected wheels, performance upgrades, distinctive liveries and highly personalised builds — while also providing a platform for Malaysian builders and enthusiasts to put their own interpretation on the culture.

The official Tokyo Auto Salon organisation highlighted this local-global fusion, describing the event as a platform to showcase Malaysian builders, tuners, designers, painters, fabricators, collectors and workshops alongside the Japanese automotive influence.

This created an interesting contrast across the show floor.

Commercial exhibitors brought established brands, new products and international collaborations, while community displays demonstrated what happens when enthusiasts take those same ideas and push them into highly personal territory.

For Malaysia’s tuning scene, that grassroots representation was arguably just as important as the headline manufacturers and aftermarket brands.

From Show Cars to Cars in Motion

The addition of outdoor demonstration space gave Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia something previous editions could not fully deliver: movement.

The 2026 event incorporated live driving and drift demonstrations, bringing the motorsport element much closer to the centre of the visitor experience. The new outdoor format had been specifically introduced as part of the show’s expansion at MAEPS.

And let’s be honest — modified cars look good parked under exhibition lights.

But they look way better sideways.

The sound of engines, tyre smoke and cars being driven in anger added an entirely different level of energy to the weekend, while also giving photographers and content creators an opportunity to capture the machines in their natural habitat.

Han Arrives in Malaysia

Adding another layer of excitement was the appearance of Hollywood actor Sung Kang, best known to car enthusiasts worldwide as Han Lue from the Fast & Furious franchise.

Kang’s arrival in Malaysia generated significant attention, with fans gathering at KLIA before his appearance at Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia.

His connection with automotive culture made him a natural fit for the event. His portrayal of Han in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift helped cement one of cinema’s most recognisable links between Japanese car culture, drifting and street-car aesthetics.

For fans, seeing Han himself turn up at a Tokyo Auto Salon event in Malaysia was one of those crossover moments where movie culture and real-world automotive culture collided.

And yes — there was almost certainly a lot of “Han has arrived” energy around MAEPS that weekend.

Brands, Builds and the Business of Tuning

While the spectacle provided the entertainment, the commercial side of Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia remained an important part of the event.

The show gave aftermarket manufacturers, distributors, workshops and automotive businesses a platform to introduce products, engage directly with enthusiasts and demonstrate where the regional tuning market is heading.

Among the brands and product stories highlighted around the event were names such as AlphaRex, Yamaha Performance Dampers and other aftermarket and performance-related offerings, reflecting the increasingly sophisticated nature of Malaysia’s modification industry.

This is where Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia continues to have relevance beyond simply being an enthusiast gathering.

Malaysia has developed a sizeable ecosystem of workshops, fabricators, distributors, tuners, detailers, designers and specialist businesses. Bringing those players together with international brands and visitors gives the local industry an opportunity to showcase its capabilities on a much larger stage.

More Than Just a Japanese Car Show

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the 2026 edition is that Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia is no longer simply about importing the Tokyo Auto Salon experience into Malaysia.

It is increasingly becoming its own automotive culture platform.

The official Japanese Tokyo Auto Salon organisation noted that the Malaysian event brought together Japanese car culture with Malaysia’s own custom scene, while the 2026 format expanded into community areas, food, entertainment and outdoor activities.

That evolution is important.

The Malaysian automotive scene has never been just about JDM cars. It is a mixture of Japanese tuning, motorsport, stance culture, performance builds, local fabrication, car clubs, aftermarket businesses, collectors and an increasingly influential creator community.

Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia 2026 reflected that reality.

The Road Ahead

The rebranding from Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia, combined with the move to MAEPS, represents more than a fresh logo or larger venue.

It signals an ambition to position the event as a broader national and regional automotive lifestyle platform.

The official event website described the 2026 edition as three days of Japanese custom-car culture featuring builds, brands, stage activity and the crowd, while the Japanese Tokyo Auto Salon organisation highlighted the combination of custom cars, tuning culture and Malaysia’s own automotive community.

After three days at MAEPS, the direction appears clear: less static motor show, more automotive festival.

For Roadtrippers, that evolution represents an important development for Malaysia’s automotive event calendar.

And if Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia continues down this road, the next chapter could get very interesting indeed.
