I was back to my hometown last week and decided to check out one of the latest 4-star addition to Penang’s fast growing community of hotels.
The Jazz Hotel is Penang’s only Jazz-theme hotel and is located in Tanjung Tokong, opposite TESCO and just a stone throw away from Straits Quay. Easily accessible to Pulau Tikus, Gurney Drive, UNESCO Heritage Georgetown and the famed Batu Ferringhi Beach, Jazz Hotel also comes with the convenience of having a few food outlets, pharmacy and a Happy Mart within it building.
The Jazzy atmosphere are felt the moment you walked into this Jazz-inspired hotel, you will come across many jazz era related memorabilias and paintings, neon light signs, plush leather sofas and arm-chairs and with the soft jazz music playing on the background, you definitely feel like you are in New Orleans back in the 30s.
My check in was swift (wasn’t too crowded the day I check-in), and staff was courteous, all waiting to assist in any way they can. Paid my room deposit (RM 100 per room per night) and got my keys while the service staff gave me a cold towel and a glass of welcome drink. They also offered to help me with my bag to my room but it was ok – I just had with me a small cabin laptop bag since I am only here for two nights.
I got the spacious 32 sqm Seaview Deluxe Room which was very comfortable. The modern looking room comes with a huge SmarTV (and I spend a good load amount of time enjoying the various VOD such as Crazy Rich Asians, Coco, MEG, The Greatest Showman, and Murder on the Orient Express), a good size working desk, firm comfortable bed, complimentary mini-bar refilled daily, and two pairs of complimentary sandals.
Free WIFI is also available throughout the hotel.
Also you will find in your mini bar a lovely bottle of welcome mousse – I got the green-tea with red bean and it was a lovely treat in a hot sunny afternoon.
The working desk is equipped with international power socket and USB charging port, which I thought was nice and convenient.
The huge bathroom is designed in the vintage black and white with gold trimmed vanity mirror and comes with a separated shower stall and a bathtub. Toiletries are of quality and complete. Shower is powerful but a bit hot though ( a little hard to get the right temperature ).
As for amenities within the hotel, the fitness center and swimming pool is located at Level 30. Pool is not too big but ample for your laps and is shaded so its not too hot. There is also a pool bar at Level 30 if you would like to chill before dinner.
The fitness center is of good size and well equipped.
On Level 29, you will find the Strings and Sax Jazz Lounge with daily live performance starting from 10pm to 1am by some of the best Jazz musicians in Penang. The Strings and Sax Lounge are fitted with very nice and plush leather sofas and arm-chairs – very classy indeed.
Jazz Hotel Penang can also cater to your MICE needs with their ballroom and meeting rooms. It seemed they also have some open space if you like to conduct some outdoor activities.
For dining, guests can choose between the all-day dining Jazz Feast Restaurant or for diner, the fine-Japanese Kitano @ Jazz.
Buffet breakfast at Jazz Feast Restaurant comes with a good spread, good mix of Asian, Malaysia and International fares and food are quite delicious. Freshly brewed coffees, good selection of tea and juices, as well as live cooking stations for your roti, eggs and noodles.
On Saturdays, Jazz Feast Restaurant are usually packed with diners for their Jazzy Gump Seafood Buffet Dinner (it was sold out for the past many weekends, so if you plan to go for it – make sure you make your reservations). The Jazzy Gump Seafood Buffet Dinner is priced at only RM 88 or RM 108 (with free flow wine and beer) and offers diners a good selection of seafood from oysters, sashimi, crabs, shrimps, and shell-fish. A lovely mixture of authentic New Orleans style cooking and Japanese offerings ~ a very good deal indeed.
On Sundays, Jazz Feast Restaurant offers diners a sumptuous Sunday Brunch with equally good selection of Chinese, Asian and Western fares. Priced at only RM 68 for adults and RM 48 for kids / senior citizen, the Sunday Brunch offers great value for diners with their expansive menu which includes seafood, satay, sushi, roast meat, and many more.
I would suggest this new lovely Jazz Hotel for your trip to Penang – be it for leisure or business. I believe the location is good as it is easily accessible to Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi – food, shopping, leisure are all within a short drive or GRAB away and the room and hotel is comfortable.
For Jazz fans, this is a definite must-stay if you do visit Penang. Service staff is great, room is new and fresh, and dining options are good, especially over the weekends.
Did not try out the Japanese restaurant, Kitano but heard it is great too – offering some of the freshest sashimi money can buy in Penang.
