I was recently introduced to this place in Changkat, KL so I decided check out this Magnificent Fish an Chips Bar .. not once but twice, because the food were simply amazing.
My first visit was to try out one of my favorite English dish, the traditional fish and chips – since the shop’s name is Magnificent Fish and Chips Bar, they should be serving out an amazing fish and chips right? No doubt, we had one of the best if not the best authentic English fish and chips in town made with Icelandic Cod (there are few other choices of fishes to choose from)
The restaurant is located in Changkat, close enough to a public car park and was pretty happening. Both the times when we were there, its quite crowded with people, guess good food, good environment and fair value for money always draws in the crowd.
There is the an alfresco dining area, a bar counter, some in-restaurant tables as well as some lounge tables on the upper floor with a pool table. The environment is chill and relax and great for a meet up or drinks or a relaxing weekend brunch with the family.
During our first visit, we had some wonderful seafood selections .. namely their Traditional Fish and Chips, Grilled Mackerel Niciose, Mussels in Basil and Tomato, Guinness Steak Pie and a lovely Kedgeree. Their traditional fish and chips undoubtedly is fabulous. The batter gives you that crunch while the fish is so moist and tender inside and is served with generous amount of thick cut fries.
I also like that Grilled Mackerel Nicoise .. two thick slices of fresh grilled mackerel over a perfectly cooked bed of niciose salad – crunchy long beans, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, onions, some leafy greens and potatoes. I am not too big a fans of salad but this combination is not too bad for me.
The Guinness Steak Pie is also another flavorful item on their menu which I like quite well. You find chucks of beef steaks in stew, well marinated and tender yet not fat and under a nice blanket of buttery baked pastry.
The Kedgeree was something new to me .. never knew English people can prepare rice and curry so well but looking into the history of Kedgeree, it is a dish adopted from India in the 14th century and has been enjoyed by the English since then. The butter rice is finely flavored with flakes of smoked fish and the light curry sauce enhances the dish so well. Don’t expect the usual curry we get from mamak but this is a lovely thick but mild curry.
I wasn’t a big fan of mussels but the one my friend ordered this and it wasnt too bad .. the mussels were fresh and the flavoring of the dish was good.
The Magnificent Fish and Chips not only serve good food but is also a place for you to come to enjoy some drinks with friends. The have a fully stocked bar (and wine cellar) and some pretty amazing menu of cocktails. Since I wasn’t a drinker, my friends enjoyed the Espresso Martini and the Perfect Sunday Hangover Cure.
After really having a wonderful outing, we decided to drop by the place on a Sunday to try out their Sunday Brunch Special where they serve their amazing Sunday Roasts. You have three choices of meat – chicken, beef and lamb .. and my favorite was of course the lamb and beef, while my friend preferred the chicken. The slow roasted meat is so tender and juicy .. comes with sides of roasted potatoes and vegetables as well as a very nice Yorkshire pudding. The thick gravy is also so flavorful and addictive. Omg, how I crave this on weekends.
Apart from three different Sunday Roast, we also had the Grilled Rainbow Trout. The trout was so tender and juicy and cooked perfectly with light seasoning to maintain the delicate taste of the fish.
Wrapping up the Sunday afternoon was our fabulous dessert – the Chocolate Fondant Cake .. a nice warm chocolate cake, not overly sweet, a perfect wrap-up for a wet Sunday afternoon.
I am totally happy with both my visits to this English-eatery .. food is amazing and addictive, prices are fair and the vibe is good. Servers are friendly and attentive and parking is within a short walk away. This is definitely a place that I will plan to come back when I am thinking of good English food.
